The most beautiful and picturesque area of Mallorca is the Pollenca region which has a unique charm and beauty, and is the ideal destination for quality, family villa holidays. Pollença Old Town is a peaceful and tranquil town that remains very typically Spanish. It is four miles from the coast, nestling between two hills at the eastern end of the Tramuntana mountains. Pollença itself is indisputably pretty. Historic buildings with ochre roofs, sun-baked walls and wooden shutters line the narrow and twisting medieval streets. There are pastel-painted houses in the centre and Moorish water mills on the outskirts. It's also a haven of sleepy Mallorcan traditions - café life and the siesta roll on here as they always have. The heart of the old town is the central square, Plaça Major, where there are many café-bars and fine restaurants. Pollença also has lots of galleries of Mallorcan art and design, and a town museum. The most famous walk in Pollença is up the 365 steps of the tree-lined 'Calvario' - the Calvari Hill. There is a tiny church at the top with amazing views over the town and across wooded valleys to the sea

Puerto Pollensa is host to long sandy beaches that curve around the bay and are divided by breakwaters and so are ideal for children. There are also a number of small, natural, sand and pebble beaches to explore. The atmosphere in Puerto Pollensa is relaxed with no loud discos or nightclubs, but a fine variety of open-air cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops.

The countryside around Pollenca Old Town and Puerto Pollensa is amongst the most stunning and picturesque in the Mediterranean. Lush green dramatic valleys, litterered with grazing mountain goats and sheep and beautiful rural famrland hillsides dotted aournd picturesque monasterys and farms are the typical view from your garden here. Cala D'Or has grown from its fishing village origins and now boasts seven fine sandy coves with crystal clear water, all within a one mile radius. Highlights include a magnificent marina, an excellent selection of shops, superb restaurants, open air bars and an 18-hole golf course as well as many other sports facilities. A short coastal drive will bring you to a host of tiny and picturesque beach resorts and coves with fine white sand, known as "the calas".

Porto Petro is just a couple of kilometres south of Cala D'Or and is certainly a place to make the effort to get to. It is still at heart a Mallorcan fishing village in spite of the arrival of tourism which provides the visitor with a handful of pleasant little bars and restaurants. Aim to get there for lunch and go to either La Caracola, Can Martina or Porto Mar. The terraces of these restaurants overlook the small fishing port and offer great value 'menus del dia'.

Local knowledge

Taste: To the north of the main town is the very impressive Cala D'Or marina which ouzes wealth. A wide range of very expensive boats are moored there. The restaurants overlooking the marina are a fine choice for dinner one evening.

Drink: You'll find a pleasant selection of mainly German and British bars in Cala D'Or. The marina offers a selection of more upmarket bars. There are a variety of hotels all serving drinks and providing a relaxed atmosphere.

Weekly Market: Felanitx is recognised as being one of the best in Majorca, and is well worth a visit on a Sunday morning. This is a good place to pick up some locally made pottery, but be prepared to haggle for the best bargains. There are fruit and produce markets which are held at nearby Santanyi every Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Discover: A little further south is the stunning national park of Mondragó, which is worth a trip in the car. The first beach when arriving from the road has beautiful turquoise water and is surrounded by an impressive cove. A walk alongside the sea to the right of the beach takes you round to a another larger sandy beach.

Es Trenc is a beautiful beach of clear blue water and golden sand, backed by pine trees and dunes, stretching for almost 5km along the wild south eastern coast of the island. There's a small bar-restaurant here and you can hire sun umbrellas.

Supermarkets: There is a large Caprabo in Cala D'Or centre plus a number of smaller supermarkets.



The "Calas"

Cala Gran, a very quaint beach which is overlooked by Rocador Playa. The water is beautifully clean and the beach is well maintained, a pleasant café bar restaurant provides typical beach refreshments.

Cala D'Or is a pine fringed cove with two fine small beaches.

Cala Esmeralda is a beautiful beach surrounded by tasteful properties.

Cala Ferrera with a golden, sandy beach lying next to some fabulous craggy rock formations and with nice bars at the end of the beach. This is overlooked by Cala Serena.

The largest of these coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina that effectively splits the resort in two.

South-east Mallorca is full of surprises and benefits from avoiding the excesses of large scale tourism development. Discover secluded coves, rugged cliffs and long golden sands. Uncover pretty coastal villages, historic towns and unspoilt countryside. Villaparade clients will benefit from inclusive car hire as nothing is very far away in this area. Calonge: Just two-minutes drive from Cala D'Ors' beaches and resort centre this pretty village has a small selection of restaurants.

S'Horta: An atmospheric traditional Spanish village with narrow streets, a beautiful church and several restaurants, shops and bars nestled on the outskirts of Cala D'Or.

S'Alqueira Blanca: A quaint little village with a cafe, newspaper shop, an excellent tapas bar and Italian restaurant.

Porto Cristo: One of the oldest Mediterranean ports with a safe beach and a selection of bars and restaurants. The Caves of Drac, with its underground lake, is one of the largest in the world. Caves of Ham is also worth a visit.

Cas Concos: Ideal for relaxed evenings out. With several bars, three excellent restaurants, supermarket and bakery.

Es Llombards: The beach at Cala Llombards is one of the most beautiful places on the Island. This village has a lovely restaurant 'La Pergola' and the nearby hamlet of Ses Salinas is worth a visit to dine at "'Bodegon Casa Manolo'.

Cala Murada: A pretty holiday resort with restaurants, cafes & supermarkets.

Santanyi: A must see with historic buildings, art galleries, restaurants and a lovely town square. The beach is enclosed by pine-trees - this lovely sandy cove has clear waters.

Porto Colom: Perhaps best viewed from the sea are the picturesque coves that make up this area. The harbour area boasts many fine sea-food and tapas restaurants.

There is a wide range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, including several of the best fish restaurants on the island. Try the "rape a la marinera" (chunks of monkfish in a rich seafood sauce)
Drink: There are several English and Irish bars, in the pretty square mixing with designer cocktail bars and is the perfect place to soak up the friendly nightlife.
Weekly Market: Every Wednesday 08.00 to 13.00 selling fresh products and local delicacies as well as flowers and craft goods.
Discover: The Boquer Valley walk is a famous and picturesque walk from Puerto Pollença which takes about an hour to walk to the lovely Cala Boquer beach.
Supermarkets: Large Eroski (formerly Caprabo) at the entrance to the Port on the left opposite the petrol station open Mon-Sat 9am-10pm Sun 10am-2pm. There are a number of smaller supermarkets in the Port.
Formentor: Parallel to the Pine Walk is the Carretera-Formentor road which leads to the Formentor peninsula with its stunning beaches, lighthouse, and famous hotel. The mountain road has lots of hairpin bends but the views over Formentor bay from the 'mirador' lookout at the top are absolutely spectacular - and there's even a bus or boat from the Port if you don't want to use the car.

Pollença Old Town is a peaceful and tranquil town that remains very typically Spanish. It is four miles from the coast, nestling between two hills at the eastern end of the Tramuntana mountains. Pollença itself is indisputably pretty. Historic buildings with ochre roofs, sun-baked walls and wooden shutters line the narrow and twisting medieval streets. There are pastel-painted houses in the centre and Moorish water mills on the outskirts. It's also a haven of sleepy Mallorcan traditions - café life and the siesta roll on here as they always have. The heart of the old town is the central square, Plaça Major, where there are many café-bars and fine restaurants. Pollença also has lots of galleries of Mallorcan art and design, and a town museum. The most famous walk in Pollença is up the 365 steps of the tree-lined 'Calvario' - the Calvari Hill. Puerto Pollensa is host to long sandy beaches that curve around the bay and are divided by breakwaters and so are ideal for children. There are also a number of small, natural, sand and pebble beaches to explore. The atmosphere in Puerto Pollensa is relaxed with no loud discos or nightclubs, but a fine variety of open-air cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops.

Weekly Market: It's especially lively in Pollença on market day, every Sunday morning, with stalls selling fruit, flowers, local crafts, clothes and household goods.

Discover: Pollença is nestled between two hills. One of these hills is Puig de Maria with an 18th-century monastery perched on the summit - a walk to the top is well worth the effort for spectacular views over Pollença and down to the sea.

Cala San Vicente, another of the best-kept secrets in the North of Mallorca. It's a quiet and relaxed resort surrounded by mountains with pine-covered slopes that run down to the sea. The sparkling blue waters and the three sandy coves are very child-friendly. The spectacular countryside here is also ideal walking country, popular with ramblers and painters.

Bonaire is an exclusive residential area on the peninsula around the bay of Pollença towards Alcudia with a pretty marina called Puerto Cocodrilo and a lovely sandy beach called Mal Pas. Son Serra de Marina with its appealing marina and sandy beach is 8km from the larger resort of Ca'n Picafort which shares the same sweeping bay as Alcudia. Ca'n Picafort's lively but friendly and relaxed atmosphere is ideal for families and couples.

The regions of Pollença

ternelles valley: a lush green valley to the north of Pollença old town, and has a lane eventually running through to the ruined castle, Castell del Rei, high up in the mountains.
la font: an upmarket countryside residential area on the outskirts of Pollença old town within walking distance.
puig maria: the 18th•century monastery with its' tiny restaurant of 'our lady of the puig' dominates Pollença old town. The famous walk is well worth trying one morning or late afternoon.
son toni: small established private setting with countryside and beautiful rural farmland views.
colonya valley: a beautiful and dramatic valley, with sheep grazing on the lower slopes and mountain goats up on the higher rocks.
crestaix: residential area with villas with large gardens off leafy avenues and with mountain views.
font xica: a rural area halfway between the medieval town of Pollença and the beach and marina at Puerto Pollença.
pontarro: a peaceful, sparse residential area, several minutes away by car from the old town of Pollença. It gets its name from the Mallorcan word for bridge.
marina: a very quiet rural area with pretty villas near the golf course.
son roger: a quiet and largely unspoilt rural area between Pollença and Alcudia.
boquer: a picturesque rural area with dramatic mountain views on the edge of the beautiful Boquer valley and is also a prime area for seeing rare birds.

Cala San Vicente is nestled between Pollença and Puerto Pollença on the northern coast of Mallorca and is a real taste of authentic Spain. The pretty town is home to several of Villaparade's villas and apartments and the neighbouring resorts of Pollença and Puerto Pollença are easily accessible too.

Cala San Vicente is one of the smallest resorts on the island of Mallorca. It's still a fishing village, with a handful of amenities for tourists, there are several café-bars, shops and restaurants. There are three quiet beaches in Cala San Vicente - Cala Molins, Cala Clara and Cala Barques - all have fine sands and are great for bathing. Cala Barques is the resort's main beach with a few small restaurants, bars and shops. There are numerous sunbeds and pedaloes for hire.

As well as bathing on one of the beaches or swimming in the gentle waters you can enjoy some marvellous walks and hikes starting in Cala San Vicente. You can walk around the Formentor peninsula or the more energetic can hike over it to the larger beach resort of Puerto Pollença or take the gentle walk to Pollença old town via La Font where there are several Villaparade villas. The nightlife is laid-back in Cala San Vicente and usually consists of a pleasant evening meal and a few quiet drinks. There's a small selection of restaurants and bars in Cala San Vicente but a wide range to choose from in Pollença and Puerto Pollença which are only a short drive or taxi-ride away.

A short coastal drive will bring you to a host of tiny and picturesque beach resorts and coves with fine white sand, known as "the calas". Cala Mandia is situated on the east coast of Majorca close to Porto Cristo. It is a small, quiet resort offering a relaxing holiday in the sun. There are a number of shops providing holiday essentials as well as bars and restaurants. The Resort lies around a pretty bay with clear blue waters. The bay is a deep inlet offering shelter to its long stretch of sandy beach. The beach shelves gently into the sea providing safe bathing for the kiddies. Cala Mandia is essentially a family resort and one that attracts older couples. It promises a sandy beach with safe bathing, a variety of restaurants and pleasant evenings spent eating and drinking while watching the moonlight over the bay. The holiday season in Cala Mandia begins in April and ends in late October. Temperatures range from twenty to mid thirty degrees centigrade.
Cala Mandia is only three kilometres from its neighbour Porto Cristo and there is a frequent local bus service between the resorts. Cala Mandia is very quiet and relaxed by both day and night. There are shops providing daily necessities as well as gifts and holiday souvenirs. There are numerous bars and restaurants offering a range of food and catering for most tastes. Although Cala Mandia has a limited number of leisure activities, a wider range, including water sports, can be found at neighbouring resorts. The nearest golf course is fifteen kilometres away.There are two popular attractions close by namely the Dragon Caves and the Hams Caves. Both of these have wonderful examples of stalactites and stalagmites and other formations all dramatically illuminated. At the end of the Dragon Caves there is a vast underground lake claiming to be the largest in the world. The cavern has perfect acoustics and as the excursion ends music is played from boats in the lake.
Much of the nightlife in Cala Mandia is hotel based with discos and karaoke. Entertainment in the resort is fairly low-key with bars and restaurants providing pleasant venues for evening drinks over dinner. There are a number of shops providing holiday essentials as well as the usual gift and souvenir shops giving plenty of opportunities for purchasing holiday mementos. Leather goods, embroidered linens, ceramics and glass goods are favourite purchases.
Cala Mandia has a good choice of restaurants serving traditional as well as international cuisine. Fish features prominently on menus and there are some excellent fish restaurants overlooking the bay. Tapas are a good way to sample local food as a variety of dishes is served in small portions, ideal as a first course or to fill the sometimes lengthy gap between lunch and dinner. It is on Mallorca's south-eastern coast, 3 km from Cala d'Or. Porto Petro is a charming fishing village that has retained its original flavour - charming to walk around with a handful of pleasant bars and restaurants. Most activity in Porto Petro is focused on the harbour. The craft centres at Manacor are popular. There are excellent seafood restaurants clustered on the harbour-side, with a handful of other shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. Also Cabo de Satorre is just a stone's throw away, as are other secluded, sandy coves.

Bar Telefonos offers live music on a Saturday evening and there are several superb restaurants.

Calonge is a small hamlet very close to S'Horta and Cala D'Or and is home to five hundred residents. According to local legend, when king Jaume I passed this spot it reminded him of the village of Calonge in the Empordà region of Catalonia, and he thus bestowed it with this name.

S'Horta, nestled on the outskirts of Cala D'Or, is an atmospheric traditional Spanish village with narrow streets, a beautiful church and several restaurants, shops and bars. Felanitx is at the centre of Mallorca's second wine producing area and it is also known for its capers, or 'green pearls'. You can buy them at the Sunday morning market, one of Mallorca's largest, which spills out onto the streets around the church of Sant Miquel, with local pottery displayed on the church steps. It is a traditional Mallorcan town steeped in history and a short drive will take you to the coast with a wide range of wonderful sandy coves, beaches and the centre of Cala D'Or.

You only have to walk through its streets to realise the importance they held in other times. These days its habitants are a mixture of Mallorcans, people from all regions of the Spanish peninsular and increasingly large amount of non-Spanish residents. The Council organizes courses in Catalan, which are available to those who are interested in learning this language. There is a school for adults, a school of music, fire brigade, social security office, a cinema and a Cultural Centre that without a doubt is the best in the district, offering throughout the year many cultural events of all types, exhibitions, concerts and the presentation of books.

Beaches

The district of Felanitx has the most beautiful countryside and some of the most wonderful beaches and sandy coves. There are four great beaches within the region of Felanitx:

Cala Marcal: Tourist resort with hotels, restaurants and bars. This fine-sand beach has sun-beds, parasols, shower facilities, pedal boats and changing rooms.

Cala Brafi: Small fine-sand beach located in an area of countryside. There are bar facilities and the beach has sun-beds and umbrellas.

Cala Sa Nau: Another small fine-sand beach a countryside setting. There is a bar and the beach has sun-beds, parasols, and changing rooms.

Cala Ferrera: Fine-sand beach located in a residential area. The beach has sun-beds, parasols, shower facilities, pedal boats and changing rooms.

Es Llombards is one of the most peaceful villages in the locality, where time rhythmically passes in it’s two coffee bars. The village people live their lives independently of the tourist season, indicating their aim for a wise and rhythmically healthy lifestyle. Also possessing four beaches with crystal clear water Cala Llombards is the only one with services with various bars and a small food shop. Also recommended, is the craftsmanship used in the production of cheese at the local factory.
Es Llombards is a small village of around 500 people. The hamlet probably grew up in the 17th century around the communal pools which King Jaume II of Mallorca had built in order to ensure there was a water supply to the area. In times gone by the economy was based around agriculture, with vine cultivation being important. Now foreigners own houses in the village and the surrounding area, either as permanent dwellings or second homes.
Cala Llombards, surrounded by a development of the same name, is a very quiet area with many families who holiday here in summer. The development sprang up in 1969 and most of the houses are second homes. It also has a hotel with a capacity of 60 and three restaurants. All these facilities are at some distance from the beach, where there is a beach bar, sunbeds and beach umbrellas.
Although this development has taken its name of Cala Llombards, it is really situated within the estate - possessió, in Catalan - of Son Amer, which also lends its name to the stream at the mouth of which is a small beach. Cala Llombards can be reached from the road linking Santanyí with es Llombards, though there is no bus, the nearest stop being Cala Santanyí. The Palma-Cala Santanyi bus line leaves from Plaza de España in Palma.
Cala Llombards is the starting point for many excellent outings to the surrounding villages, and many an interesting walk can be found. From the beach, for example, there is a path on the right that runs along the coast to the excellent mirador above es Pontas - a well known whim of geological architecture.

S'Alqueria Blanca is a quaint little village with a café, newspaper shop, an excellent tapas bar and an Italian restaurant. S'Alqueria Blanca is an enchanting place. A short 25-minute drive down the coast road from Pollença brings you to the resort of C'an Picafort which shares the same sweeping bay as Alcudia. C'an Picafort lies in the centre of the bay of Alcudia on the north coast of Mallorca. Gently curving its way around the horseshoe-shaped bay, there's thirteen kilometres of gorgeous silky white sands to choose from.

With gently shelving, fine sands, the lively but friendly and relaxed atmosphere is ideal for families and couples. Originally a small fishing village, the main hub of the resort is down by the working harbour. Evenings tend to revolve around the many restaurants and bars, choose from international cuisine or local Spanish specialities at inviting restaurants and finish the evening off with a drink in one of the laid-back bars.

The days in C'an Picafort are normally spent on the beach or around the pool in the privacy of your villa. If you fancy something a little different, you can take a stroll along the promenade and visit the weekly street market, packed with stalls selling a wide range of gifts, toys, clothing and locally produced food and drink. The attractive port area towards the southern end of the resort is the base for numerous leisure activities and boat trips. Nearby attractions also include the C'an Picafort karting track which is the biggest in Mallorca and the Rancho Grande where you can go horse riding by day or indulge yourself at one of their barbecues by night. The stretch of water between C'an Picafort and Alcudia is a favourite spot for windsurfers and lessons are available for beginners.

A number of companies offer scuba diving excursions and classes for all levels. Different boat trips head out of Can Picafort daily including ones along the stunning headland of Cap de Formentor. Check timetables locally for details. Golfers will be delighted to know that there are six golf courses within 30km. A few minutes drive away is the pretty marina and resort of Son Serra de Marina with a wide sandy beach and a church, chemist, grocers, bakers and a handful of restaurants.
